Sunday February 2nd. Almerimar marina.

This is a much bigger place than I was expecting, big marina and huge holiday complex with loads of bars and restaurants and the ones that are open are busy even on a Sunday in February, probably they come from Adra. A lot of people living on their boats too judging by the amount of mail in the marina office. Almerimar is a tiny place on the map, I'm not even sure whether there is an old original pueblo.

  1. Wow. Just googled the place and inland it is just a plastic (greenhouse) wilderness. A few years back when we looked out over Mazarron there were a lot there, but this place must be ten times bigger. I know the area is renowned for their greenhouses.

  2. Looking down from Google earth it looks like snowfields, side on it's not so impressive, although I've been trying to get a good photo of it to post, I just haven't yet. It produces over 30,000 tonnes of plastic waste each year.

  3. The plastic waste is a shocking but well-hidden fact. A lot of it ends up dumped in the sea. Also, the fact that many thousands of migrant workers are kept in near-slavery conditions, totally exploited while they work in the greenhouses.

  4. It wouldn't take much sensible thought to put a plastic recycling plant in the area, so plastic waste is reduced. Most supermarkets in the UK sign up to modern slavery regulations for the far east etc., but seem to forget countries closer to home.
